George Arthur Carless: A Life of Service and Devotion

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Arthur Carless on August 10, 2022, at the age of 88. Born to George and Sophie Carless, formerly of Lancashire, England, George lived a life filled with purpose and dedication.

Throughout his many years in the Annapolis Valley, George was an engaged citizen who took a keen interest in local and world affairs. He frequently contributed to the Voice of the People section of the Chronicle Herald, sharing his thoughts on various topics. His passion for writing led him to join the Valley Writers' Association, where he produced several stories and articles.

George's love for writing extended beyond the page, as he also recorded books for the visually challenged. In his free time, he enjoyed using his woodworking skills to repair religious artifacts for the church. He and his wife, Grace, hosted three exchange students from Malaysia, with whom they formed a strong bond.

In addition to his many pursuits, George was a dedicated volunteer who gave back to his community in countless ways. For ten years, he drove for Family and Children's Services, and later taught English to Bosnian Refugees. He and Grace were also active members of the local parish of St Joseph's Church, where they volunteered and joined the choir.

George's military service was another significant chapter in his life. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 21 and served for 25 years, including a stint as an anti-submarine aircraft mechanic on Canada's only aircraft carrier, the Bonaventure. After retiring from the navy, George became a decorated sharpshooter.

Throughout his life, George was blessed with a loving family and many dear friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of service, love, and devotion will live on in our hearts. Rest in peace, George Arthur Carless.
